The satellite receiver converts the signal from the satellite into images. Basically the satellite receiver has 4 functions:

  1. Decoding the coded signal. To decode the signal the satellite receiver has to have the right decoding chip for decoding the channels of your subscription. The service provider can communicate -via the satellite signal- with the chip for applying the correct decoding.

  2. The satellite receiver filters the digital MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 signal and converts it to or an analog signal or HDTV-signal for watching the channel on the TV.

  3. The satellite receiver seperates the channels within the 'big' satellite signal. When you change the channel on the settop box, only that channel is send to the tv. Per settop box it's only possible to watch one channel. If you want to view multiple channels or programs on different TV's, you need multiple receivers or you need a so called Twin Tuner. This applies as well when you want to record programs; in most cases it's not possible to watch one channel and to record another channel with only one receiver (with only one tuner).

  4. The satellite receiver registers the watching of possible payed channels and communicates this with the service provider for invoicing.

 

 

Next to the functions above satellite receivers can offer a few extra options, which make watching TV more comfortable. Like for instance an Electronic Program Guide (EPG), a parental lock for channels  or programs and meanwhile lots of satellite receivers have an internal recorder (DVR) amd hard disk for storage.
